What is a Slot?

In computing, a slot is an area of memory that can be used to store data. In a computer, a single slot can be occupied by a variable-size block of data or a data structure such as an array or record. A slot can also be used as a pointer to the data or structure. A slot is often referred to as an address in computer programming languages.

In informal usage, a position or spot in a group, series, sequence, etc.: He was a good player in the squad and had a lot of people wanting his slot.

In a casino, the slots are usually arranged in sections or’salons’ that have different payout limits: Those paying out $5 or more are usually located at the ends of the aisles. It is a common belief that a machine that has gone long without paying out is “due” to hit soon: This is incorrect, as the odds of a particular combination are predetermined and do not change over time. However, some machines are designed to make their winning combinations appear more frequently than others.
